About Prague Old Town

The Prague Stare Mestro or Old Town is the medieval part of the Czech Republic, initially separated from the rest of the town by a moat which lasted till the 14th century reign of Charles IV, when the New Town was built. Today Stare Mestro is part of Praha 1 city area.

River Vltava separates Mala Strana (Lesser Quarter) from the rest of the Town and the connection is made by means of Charles Bridge. Stare Mestro was initially founded in the 9th century as a trading place. The city proper was founded during the reign of King Vaclav I. The core of the Old Town is Staromestske ( the Old Town Square ), where the town came to life as a marketplace.

Staromestske brings together old monuments built in Gothic, Romanesque or Baroque architectural styles-churches and castles which make an impressive sight. St Nicholas Church, the Church of Our Lady before Tyn and the Old Town Hall Tower with the Astronomical Clock are relevant examples in this respect. The statue of Jan Hus was constructed at the Old Town Square centre in 1915 to commemorate his death.
